Randy Cable
The CD...

While hospitalized, Randy decided to make a recording of the songs he had written about his cancer experience, along with some of the songs he had written in the past that uplifted him. This project became a lifeline, as medical professionals looked on, both bewildered and astonished. With his laptop set up in the corner of his hospital room, his guitar, a portable recording device and a microphone, Randy recorded the bare bone tracks for this CD. The idea was to get as many friends and fellow musicians as possible involved to lay the rest of the tracks for the project, each adding his or her own flare and creative style. Randy sent each musician a personalized package with specific instructions, completely ‘Randy-fied’ with his wit and wisdom. While working, he would tire quickly, but determination prevailed, as he stood for hours typing out lyrics and chords or laying tracks. On day passes, he would go to friends’ houses which were set up as ‘off-location’ studios so the others could lay their parts. He just seemed to be getting stronger, despite the doctors continually delivering more bad news. Chemotherapy and medications made his fingers numb and his voice weak, but Randy played on. Sheer determination and absolute love of music and people fuelled his passion, along with the love and support of his family, friends and a number of key players in the medical community in Canada and the United States. Somehow Randy had defied the odds and eventually was even released from the hospital after his eight-month stay.

Unfortunately, Randy did not get the chance to finish the CD. He passed away September 11, 2005 at the age of 31, but with the help of family, friends and members of the community the CD project has gone on to completion. Thanks to his detailed notes and journals, the tracks have been kept as close to his wishes as possible. Some of the songs were written before he had cancer, some were written after first being diagnosed, while others were written right on the spot in the hospital room. All of these songs are included, representing the diversity of Randy Cable and some of the challenges he faced along his amazing journey. He has taught so many people so many things about life, the will to live and the absolute strength of the human spirit. Randy Cable will forever be a legend and an inspiration. All proceeds from the CD will go to the Randy Cable Fund, dedicated to providing assistance to cancer  patients and their families.
